Educational Requirements
NPs must be licensed RNs with a bachelor’s degree and advanced education. They must earn a master’s degree in nursing, specializing in areas such as adult care, family health, pediatrics, or psychiatry. Their training includes coursework in health promotion, physical assessment, nursing research, and a supervised clinical practicum. NPs must graduate from a New York State-approved or equivalent NP program.

Licensure Requirements
NPs in New York State are licensed as RNs and certified in one or more of 16 NP specialties. To be certified in New York State as an NP, you must have graduated from a New York State Education Department registered NP education program or an equivalent program or be certified by an acceptable national certifying body, including: the American Academy of Nurse Practitioner Certification Board, the American Association of Critical Care Nurses, the American Nurses Credentialing Center, the National Certification Corporation, the Oncology Nursing Certification Corporation, and/or the Pediatric Nursing Certification Board.
