Health workforce burnout is a major issue impacting health care professionals, resulting in decreased job satisfaction, increased staff turnover, and a decline in the quality of patient care. Burnout is characterized by physical, emotional, and mental exhaustion due to prolonged and excessive stress. Contributing factors include high patient acuity, staffing shortages, and workplace violence, all of which elevate stress levels and exacerbate burnout. Addressing burnout in the health care workforce is crucial for both employee well-being and patient outcomes. Various programs have been developed to address burnout, including employee assistance programs, wellness teams (often staffed with trained behavioral health professionals), and tranquility rooms. The Iroquois Healthcare Association developed the “Mental Health and Well Being Toolkit” to help address stress and burnout.
