Occupational Therapists

What Do They Do?

What Do They Do?

Occupational therapists (OTs) treat patients with injuries, illnesses, or disabilities by helping them develop, recover, and improve the skills needed for daily living and work. They assist individuals of all ages with physical, mental, developmental, or emotional disabilities to live as independently as possible. OTs focus on improving motor functions, reasoning abilities, and compensating for permanent loss of function. They may teach the use of adaptive equipment and help patients with tasks like dressing, personal hygiene, and cooking. OTs can specialize in populations or conditions such as mental illness, stroke, or brain injuries.

Coursework includes anatomy, physiology, medical conditions, and OT theory, along with supervised internships for clinical experience. Many OT programs are transitioning to doctoral programs.
