What Do They Do?

Patient care technicians or associates (PCTs/PCAs) assist patients with daily tasks under the supervision of nurses or doctors. They provide comfort and care, take vital signs, obtain specimens, and prepare rooms and equipment. PCTs/PCAs often have more clinical skills than nursing aides and may earn higher salaries with additional technical skills or certification. While some states require certification similar to certified nursing assistants, requirements vary by state.

PCTs/PCAs receive classroom and or on the job through the hospital or facility that will employ them. The training and education requirements for PCTs/PCAs who work in hospitals or physician offices vary by institution. In some instances, employers may require a high school diploma or an associate degree and will provide on-the-job training. Others may require prior nursing aide experience or an LPN or CNA.
