What Do They Do?
Pharmacy technicians work under the direct personal supervision of licensed, New York State pharmacists. They assist licensed pharmacists as directed in the compounding, preparing, labeling, and/or dispensing of medications. A licensed pharmacist can oversee up to 2 registered pharmacy technicians simultaneously. Under Department of Health and Human Service Guidelines, pharmacy technicians can also administer COVID and flu vaccines under the supervision of pharmacists.

Licensure Requirements
To be licensed as a registered pharmacy technician in New York State, applicants must have a high school diploma or equivalent and be certified by one of two national certifying bodies. Registered pharmacy technicians are only allowed to practice in the Department of Health, Article 28 facilities including hospitals, nursing homes, diagnostic and treatment centers (clinics), and midwifery birth centers.
