What Do They Do?
What Do They Do?
EMTs and paramedics provide critical care at emergency scenes, often working with police and firefighters. Dispatched by 911, they assess conditions, administer emergency care, and transport patients to medical facilities while continuing treatment en route. At hospitals, they assist in transferring patients and report their actions to emergency staff. Paramedics have advanced training for more complex procedures. The levels of training include: Certified First Responders; Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT-B); Advanced EMTs (AEMTs); and Paramedics. Certified First Responders provide basic emergency care and life saving treatment until EMTs arrive. EMT Bs care for patients at accident scenes and during transport to hospitals, handling respiratory, cardiac, and trauma emergencies. AEMTs receive additional training for advanced life support, including airway management, IV fluids, ECG monitoring, and medication administration. Paramedics offer the most extensive pre-hospital care, including administering drugs, interpreting ECGs, performing tracheotomies, and using advanced equipment.

In New York, EMTs are certified by the Bureau of Emergency Medical Services (EMS) under the NY State Department of Health. Reciprocity is available for those trained in other states or the military. Certified first responders must be 16, and EMTs or AEMTs must be 18 by the exam month. Formal training and certification through New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH)-approved course sponsors are required, with paramedics receiving more advanced training requiring more hours of training. Some programs offer an associate degree alongside EMT training, and health care professionals may qualify for advanced placement based on their experience.
