What Do They Do?

Mental Health and Substance Abuse Social Workers, also called licensed clinical social workers, diagnose and treat substance abuse and mental, behavioral, and emotional disorders, including anxiety and depression. In addition to many of the tasks that a direct-service social worker may do, licensed clinical social workers provide individual, group, family, and couples therapy; develop treatment plans to best help their clients; and work with clients to develop strategies to change behaviors or cope with difficult situations. Licensed clinical social workers may specialize in a number of areas, including children, substance addiction, mental health, and the elderly.

Many licensed clinical social workers work in private practice, either solo or in a group with other social workers or mental health professionals. Those working in private practice often handle their own recordkeeping and billing. Licensed clinical social workers also work in psychiatric hospitals, outpatient mental health and substance abuse centers, school districts, and nursing and residential care facilities.  They may visit clients in their homes or in other locations to provide treatment.
