Speech language pathologists, or speech therapists, assess, diagnose, and treat speech, language, voice, swallowing, and fluency disorders in people of all ages. They help individuals with speech sound production, fluency issues like stuttering, voice disorders, language comprehension, and communication skills, including accent modification. They also address cognitive communication impairments from conditions like brain injuries or strokes. Speech-language pathologists often collaborate with audiologists when speech problems stem from hearing issues.

Educational Requirements
In New York, speech language pathologists must have a graduate degree in speech language pathology. Master’s programs include coursework in communication, audiology, and speech language pathology, along with 400 hours of supervised practice. Admission to most programs require an undergraduate degree in speech language pathology, audiology, or a related field like communication disorders.

Licensure Requirements
To be licensed as a speech-language pathologist in New York State, an individual must have finished a graduate degree in speech-language pathology from an accredited or equivalent educational program that includes a supervised practicum. Additionally, the individual must have completed at least 36 weeks of supervised clinical experience and pass the Specialty Area test of the Praxis Series and Praxis II.
